Vienna. Bruno Schulz receives a negative result of the entry examination at the Department of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts.

The reasons for the refusal of the commission chaired by the university Rector, Professor Ferdinand Schmutzer, are unknown1. It is possible that after submitting a portfolio of artworks, Schulz was considered to be a mature artist. He already had three well-received exhibitions in Warsaw, Vilnius and Lviv, made bookplates, many paintings and portraits, a catalogue of Stanisław Weingarten’s book collection* and recently completed prints for the series Xięga bałwochwalcza [The Booke of Idolatry]. These works are still considered the most valuable in his artistic output. (js) (transl. ms)

The decision on Schulz was made at a meeting of the professors’ panel on 15 April 1923 (Universitätsarchiv der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, Verwaltungsakten: Sitzungsprotokoll des Professorenkollegiums vom 15.04.923).
