end of 1935 / beginning of 1936

Drogobych. Bruno Schulz and Józefina Szelińska become engaged.

At the end of 1935 Schulz and Juna start talking about marriage. At the beginning of 1936, according to tradition, Schulz writes a letter to Szelińska’s parents* – Zygmunt, a lawyer, and his wife Helena – in which he asks their daughter’s hand in marriage.  He is accepted. Following this, he officially introduces Szelińska as his fiancée1. (rb) (transl. ms)

Andrzej Chciuk even remembers that “the inhabitants of Drogobych considered Schulz married” and that “students and teachers collected money for wedding presents, gave them to him and he thanked them”. Andrzej Chciuk’s letter to Jerzy Ficowski from 13 April 1966. Fred Martin gives a similar account, see Fred Martin’s letter to Jerzy Ficowski from 2 March 1966.
