Cracow. Wydawnictwo Literackie publishes the second edition of Jerzy Ficowski’s book Regiony wielkiej herezji. Szkice o życiu i twórczości Brunona Schulza.
This edition was supplemented and revised in view of all new information. Compared to the first edition, alterations affected passages devoted to Schulz’s engagement with Józefina Szelińska*, Schulz’s trip to Sweden*, circumstances of the death of Anna Płockier* and Marek Zwillich*, and plans to move Schulz from the Drogobych ghetto. Extensive fragments of the chapter “Dzieła i ocalałe i zaginion” were updated, and so was the list of persons to whom Ficowski expresses gratitude for sharing information about Schulz.
In a review of the second edition of Regiony wielkiej herezji Andrzej Szulc points out that Ficowski’s book, seven years after its release, still remains a basic source of knowledge about Schulz. The critic notes that Ficowski’s personal fascination with the work of Schulz makes “the interpretative part of the book is quite partial at times in spreading superlatives, perceiving only bright sides in his work Schulz”. In the opinion of the reviewer, the strong point of the book is the “analysis of the basics of the unique, tangible reality, of images created by the writer using the intangible medium of the word”. Despite the lack of objectivity, the critic finds Ficowski’s book worth reading. (mr) (transl. mw)
