The circumstances of this visit are special:  Schulz appears at his former fiancée’s house after her failed suicide attempt and removal from Warsaw. “After I recovered” – Szelińska* will write in a letter to Jerzy Ficowski* many years later – “[…] I returned to my parents. This is where Bruno visited me. He showed me a lot of care, devotion, brought figs and dates, which he liked so much; he was feeling guilty, which was completely groundless because he was all goodness, and the motives, which influenced his choice were «out of this world»”¹. 

This was the last intimate meeting between Schulz and Szelińska. (rb) (transl. ms)
