Janów. Bruno Schulz visits Józefina Szelińska in her family house.
The circumstances of this visit are special: Schulz appears at his former fiancée’s house after her failed suicide attempt and removal from Warsaw. “After I recovered” – Szelińska* will write in a letter to Jerzy Ficowski* many years later – “[…] I returned to my parents. This is where Bruno visited me. He showed me a lot of care, devotion, brought figs and dates, which he liked so much; he was feeling guilty, which was completely groundless because he was all goodness, and the motives, which influenced his choice were «out of this world»”1.
This was the last intimate meeting between Schulz and Szelińska. (rb) (transl. ms)
