Cracow. A facsimile edition of the manuscript of Bruno Schulz’s “A Second Autumn” is published by Wydawnictwo Literackie as edited by Jerzy Ficowski.
The manuscript of “A Second Autumn”, sent in 1934 to Kamena, a literary magazine based in Chełm and run by Kazimierz Andrzej Jaworski and Zenon Waśniewski, is the only surviving manuscript of Schulz’s literary work. It was discovered by Jerzy Ficowski among the papers left by Waśniewski.
The text of “A Second Autumn” appears in the edition of Wydawnictwo Literackie* in two forms: on the recto pages there are reproductions (made by Marek Holzman) of manuscript cards in 1:1 scale, while on the verso pages the text of the story was printed.
The edition is accompanied by Jerzy Ficowski’s afterword entitled “Słowo o “’Drugiej jesieni’” [A Word About “A Second Autumn”], in which the researcher reconstructs the origins of Schulz’s literary work, describes the history of Schulz’s contacts with Kamena, notes the differences between the manuscript version of “A Second Autumn” and the book version on the one hand and Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass on the other, and also analyses the theme of autumn in Schulz’s works.
The book also contains reproductions of sixteen illustrations Schulz made for his fiction.
„Słowo o ‘Drugiej jesieni’” was reprinted in 2002 by Ficowski in Regiony wielkiej herezji i okolice Bruno Schulz i jego mitologia as „Druga jesień”. (mr) (transl. mw)
