On the 50th anniversary of the death and the 100th  anniversary of the birth of Bruno Schulz, the third edition of Jerzy Ficowski’s Regiony wielkiej herezji is published by the Warsaw publishing house “Słowo”. The book is published in the biographical series “Chosen by Gods” (which includes such books as Mahatma Witkac by Joanna Siedlecka, Zły Tyrmand by Mariusz Urbanek, Matka Hłaski by Barbara Stanisławczyk and Miłość i śmierć Krzysztofa Kamila Baczyńskiego by Wiesław Budzyński*).

Despite the most modest editorial and a kitsch cover, it is the most complete edition of the text of Regiony wielkiej herezji. Ficowski supplemented and corrected the manuscript, taking into account the discoveries and conditions that have occurred since the previous edition in 1975. Changes concerned the origins of Bruno Schulz’s name, the circumstances of Schulz’s university studies and his father’s sickness*, the process of obtaining teacher qualifications, the exhibitions of artworks in the 1920s, the death of his mother*, a meeting with Zofia Nałkowska *, “Expose o Sklepach Cynamonowych” and the oneiric character of Schulz’s fiction. Ficowski also reveals the identity of Józefina Szelińska* as Schulz’s fiancée, adds fragments about the history of Drogobych, and removes reflections about plans to hide Schulz after his escape from the Drogobych ghetto*¹. He also updates the contents of the chapter devoted to “Surviving and Missing Works”.

In the 1992 edition, Ficowski’s book receives a new subtitle – Rzecz o Brunonie Schulzu. (mr) (transl. mw)
